Gregorio Luperón International Airport, code POP, is the main gateway to the Dominican Republic’s north coast. It sits on the coast between the city of Puerto Plata and Sosúa, so most hotels in Playa Dorada, Sosúa, and Cabarete are a reasonable drive away. If you have your entry form ready and your ride arranged before you land, you can be out of the terminal and on the road with very little fuss.

Before you fly: the paperwork that saves time

Most of the delays at any Dominican airport come from travelers filling in forms at the last minute. A little preparation at home makes a real difference.

  • The e-Ticket: the Dominican Republic uses an electronic entry and exit form, known as the e-Ticket, which you complete online and which generates a QR code. Fill it in before your trip and keep the code on your phone and, ideally, printed.
  • Passport validity: make sure your passport is valid for your whole stay. Airlines and authorities can apply their own rules, so check the current requirement for your nationality.
  • Tourist card: for many nationalities the tourist fee is included in the airfare. Rules can change, so confirm with your airline or the official immigration website before you travel.
  • Hotel address: have the full name and address of your first night’s accommodation handy. The form and immigration officers may ask for it.

Entry requirements are set by the Dominican authorities and do change. Treat this list as a checklist, not as legal advice, and verify on official sources shortly before departure.

From the plane to the arrivals hall

POP is a manageable size, which is good news after a long flight. The usual sequence is straightforward:

  1. Immigration: join the line for foreign visitors, show your passport and e-Ticket QR code, and answer a couple of simple questions about the purpose and length of your stay.
  2. Baggage claim: collect your luggage from the belt. Porters may offer help; if you accept, a tip in small bills is customary.
  3. Customs: your bags may go through a scanner. Declare anything that requires it, and keep receipts for new electronics if you are carrying several.
  4. Exit: you walk out into the arrivals area, where drivers, tour representatives, and taxi staff wait.

When several international flights land close together, especially on weekends in the high season, the immigration line can take a while. Keep water and your documents within reach.

Getting to your hotel

Once outside, you have three realistic choices. Which one is right depends on your group size, luggage, and how much you want to deal with on arrival.

OptionGood forKeep in mind
Pre-booked private transferFamilies, groups, late arrivals, anyone who wants a fixed planShare your flight number so the driver can track delays
Airport taxiTravelers who prefer not to book aheadAgree on the fare and currency before loading bags
Rental carIndependent travelers comfortable with local drivingRoads are busy with motorbikes; avoid driving at night at first

With a private transfer, the driver normally waits in the arrivals area with a sign showing your name. Before your trip, confirm the meeting point and save a WhatsApp number in case your flight changes. If you want this arranged in advance, the Puerto Plata airport transfer page explains how pickup works, and Graceland Tours also covers routes from other Dominican airports if you are flying into Santiago or Santo Domingo instead.

Playa Dorada, Sosúa, or Cabarete: what to expect on the road

Playa Dorada and Puerto Plata city

Heading west from the airport, the road follows the coast toward Puerto Plata. Playa Dorada is a gated resort complex just before the city, with several all-inclusive hotels, a golf course, and a long sandy beach. If you are staying in town or near Cofresí, you continue past the city center.

Sosúa

Sosúa is the closest of the three main areas to the airport, which makes it a convenient choice for short stays. The town is built around a sheltered bay with calm water, good for swimming and snorkeling. Our Sosúa guide covers how to spend your first days there.

Cabarete

Going east past Sosúa, the road reaches Cabarete, the north coast’s kitesurfing and windsurfing town. It is a little farther, and the main street through town can be slow in the evening, so allow extra time if you land late.

Small things that make arrival easier

  • Money: US dollars are widely accepted in tourist areas, but Dominican pesos are handy for small purchases. Airport exchange rates are usually not the best; change only what you need for the first day.
  • Phone and data: Claro and Altice are the main mobile carriers. A local SIM or eSIM can be cheaper than roaming if you are staying more than a few days.
  • Tips: tipping drivers and porters is customary. Carry small bills from home if you can.
  • Departure day: you will need the exit part of the e-Ticket as well. Check whether your airline requires you to complete it again before flying home.

Frequently asked questions

Is Puerto Plata airport the closest to Sosúa and Cabarete?

Yes. POP is the nearest international airport to Playa Dorada, Sosúa, and Cabarete. Santiago (STI) is the main alternative, but it is inland and the road trip to the coast takes considerably longer.

What happens if my flight is delayed?

If you booked a private transfer and shared your flight number, the company can follow your arrival time. Send a quick message when you land so the driver knows you are on the ground.

Can I pay a taxi at the airport in US dollars?

Usually yes. Confirm the total price and the currency before you start the ride, and have small bills ready, since drivers do not always carry change.
